Victoria Falls Activities Guide

Experience the splendour of the Victoria Falls

Livingstone (Victoria Falls), Zambia, is Southern Africa's adventure capital. The Upper Zambezi River, the Victoria Falls and the Batoka Gorges below the Falls provide an adventure playground found nowhere else in the world.

Zambezi River

The Zambezi River below the Victoria Falls is internationally acclaimed as the best one-day white water rafting experience in the world. The rafting takes place in the gorges below the Falls and at certain times of the year clients can start directly under the waterfall, in the 'boiling pot'. The river drops about 400 feet over a 24 kilometer (14.9 miles) stretch and is regarded as a high volume, pool-drop river i.e. the rapids have few exposed rocks and below every rapid is a pool to aid recovery. A fully qualified and highly experienced white water oarsman guides each raft. Safety kayakers to assist in rapid recovery in the event of a raft capsizing also accompany each trip.

Watersports

There are other adrenaline options on the Zambezi below the Falls. River boarding is conducted on the same stretch of river as the rafting and is an incredibly exciting experience. Basic river boarding skills are taught in still water before progressing into moving water and varying degrees of white water rapids. Perfecting the art of 'surfing' a wave is the objective. Tandem kayaking is another dimension to the white water experience on the Zambezi River where clients are taken down the rapids in Topolino duo kayaks. An experienced white water kayaker will guide and steer the boat through the rapids while the client 'just enjoys'.

Jet Boating

Jet boating is a thrilling new adventure introduced to the Batoka Gorges. Each 6m jet boat has a powerful 8,2 litre engine with 350 horsepower and carries 11 passengers. Feel the wind in you hair and the spray in your face as the highly skilled and experienced driver negotiates you through white water rapids, passing within inches of the gorge walls and spinning in flat open water.

Batoka Gorge

Abseiling, gorge swinging and the flying fox are relatively new activities in the Batoka Gorge and are operated at a spectacular site above Rapid No. 7. Full and half-day options are available whereby clients can enjoy their choice of activity as many times as they wish.

Victoria Falls Bridge

The Victoria Falls Bridge is the platform for an 111 metres (364.1 feet) pure adrenaline bungi jump. Over 60 000 adrenaline junkies have committed themselves to the thrill of throwing themselves off this bridge. Photographs and videos are taken of each jumper and are available for purchase.

Victoria Falls Tour

For the less adventurous still wanting to experience the Zambezi River and other less extreme activity options there is a tour of the Falls. A natural phenomenon and one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls is an immense one-mile wide curtain of water cascading 100 metres (328 feet) into the gorge below. Around 550 million liters of water fall over the lip every minute, increasing to 750 million liters at peak flow (May / June).

Experience a bird's eye view of the Victoria Falls on a thrilling flight over the spray and the Zambezi River in a helicopter, micro light or fixed wind aircraft. The helicopter seating is designed so all passengers have a good view of the Falls and scenery below. The micro light has an open cockpit for the ultimate adrenaline ride. Flight duration ranges from 15 minutes, which offers stunning views of the Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River, to 30 minutes flying downstream over the Batoka Gorge and upstream over the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National park. Fixed wind flights range in duration from 25-40 minutes and follow the same course as that of the micro light.
